Flame-retardant or food-compliant?

These products offer both

Many food producers are familiar with this dilemma: The conveyor belt must be flame-retardant, but of course also have food approval. Märtens has the right tips for this.

Many flame-retardant conveyor belts are not approved for food contact due to the special, non-food-safe additives, as halogens and phosphorus-based compounds can be potentially harmful to health. The requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004, which aims to ensure that materials and objects that come into contact with food do not release any components into the food, are very strict and rightly so.

However, manufacturers must also comply with the specifications of insurance companies that require flame-retardant materials for fire safety reasons. So do the safety regulations of the plants stand in the way of product safety?

Safe in every respect

To avoid this dilemma, we recommend materials to our customers that are naturally flame-retardant and food-safe. These include, for example, certain silicone or PTFE-coated belts or, of course, metal conveyor belts. These offer sufficient fire resistance without the need to use harmful additives.

Manufacturers can also design their production environment to minimise the risk of fire in other ways, for example by using modern fire protection technologies such as automatic fire extinguishing systems, smoke detectors and fire barriers. By implementing such measures, manufacturers can fulfil insurance requirements without compromising on food safety.

In addition, we also recommend that our customers work closely with their insurance companies to develop customised fire safety concepts that are specifically tailored to their production processes. Through transparent communication and targeted investment in fire safety measures, safe and compliant operations can be ensured.
